Work records and source editions

We use work records from IMSLP and Mutopia as starting points for identifying public-domain compositions. A work record is not permission to copy every modern edition associated with it. Typesetting, editorial additions, translations, arrangements, and recordings can have separate rights.

The historical publication reference displayed on a song page describes the work or melody. It does not certify a specific PDF edition. The Owner must inspect the selected edition and record its publication details, jurisdiction, and permission basis before approving an arrangement.

What these practice studies contain

Our current data consists of manually entered theme excerpts with a simplified Easy mode, an Intermediate bass guide, and an Original key excerpt. These are site-created educational studies of older melodies. They are not complete critical editions or reproductions of a modern arranger’s score.

Letter notes, virtual piano characters, audio, MIDI, PDF, and MusicXML all derive from the same pitch-event data. The virtual piano copy format preserves pitch order and chords; note durations are retained in playback, MIDI, and MusicXML.

The publication gate

Before publication, every study needs a source-edition record, a human play-through of the complete study, pitch and timing validation, reversible letter mapping, and at least five relevant questions and answers. Draft studies stay marked as previews and carry noindex. Their song and virtual-format pages do not enter the sitemap.

Automated checks support editorial review. They cannot establish the legal status of a modern edition or judge whether a melody sounds correct. Those decisions remain pending until an Owner or qualified reviewer records approval.
