Gymnopedie No.1

Erik Satie · D major · Easy melody study

Educational theme excerpt. Draft: human play-through and source-edition review pending.

Upper-melody study of bars 5-18. The four-bar introduction is omitted; one beat precedes the melody. Original key joins the tied F#4 in bars 9-12 into a twelve-beat hold. Intermediate adds ten isolated bass cues. Easy makes every event one beat. The 42-beat Original key study ends at bar 18, before the low-E continuation.

- F#5 A5 G5 F#5 C#5 B4 C#5
D5 A4 F#4 - F#5 A5 G5 F#5
C#5 B4 C#5 D5 A4 C#5 F#5

Letters name pitches; numbers identify octaves. A dash means rest. Easy mode uses one beat for every event.

A small practice plan

  1. Find F-sharp and C-sharp before playing the upper line.
  2. Leave one beat of silence before the first F-sharp in Original key mode.
  3. Move your hand for F-sharp to A instead of stretching the fingers.
  4. Count the A for three beats, then the lower F-sharp for twelve beats in Original key mode.
  5. Treat the Intermediate bass notes as isolated practice cues, not the complete accompaniment.
