Letters name the notes. The number tells you the octave. Brackets [ ] = play together. A dash = rest.

Easy uses even beats. Intermediate adds a bass guide. Original key keeps the entered excerpt rhythm, not a complete original score.

How to play The Entertainer with letters

Choose Easy and start with the first eight notes. Each letter names a piano pitch; the number identifies its octave. C4 is middle C, and a # raises a note by one semitone. Press Play to hear the melody and follow the highlighted notes on the keyboard.

Easy gives the pitches a steady one-beat pulse. When the notes feel familiar, try Original key for the entered excerpt rhythm. Intermediate adds occasional bass notes as a coordination exercise. Brackets mean play the enclosed pitches at the same time, and a dash means leave a short rest.

Use the speed menu to give your hands time to move. The transpose controls shift every pitch together, and the copied notes, PDF, MIDI, and MusicXML follow your current selection. A shared link remembers the difficulty, transposition, format, and speed. The virtual piano text records pitch order and chords; listen to the player or use MIDI for timing.

Five little things to practice

  1. Find D-sharp next to D before playing.
  2. Move the hand for the E to high C leap; do not stretch.
  3. Learn the pitches slowly before adding syncopation.
  4. Keep repeated high C notes relaxed.
  5. Use this theme as a preparation exercise before approaching the full rag.

A little about the melody

Scott Joplin published The Entertainer in 1902 as a ragtime two-step. Its characteristic syncopation and broad piano texture make the full score much more demanding than a first melody. This short study isolates the opening tune in C major. It does not contain the complete rag or its original accompaniment.

Keep your first session short enough to feel comfortable. Work on a phrase you can repeat with relaxed hands, then connect it to the next one. A clean, slow repetition gives you a more useful reference than a fast run with uncertain notes. If a leap feels awkward, pause and find the destination key before trying it in time.

From the browser to your piano

Copy the named letter notes for a quick reference, or choose PDF for a practice page with the title and source information. Print opens your browser’s print dialog. MIDI preserves the pitches, rests, chords, and selected playback speed for practice in a compatible music app. MusicXML is a minimal educational export; its phrase timing should be checked in your notation program.

The printable sheet also opens without JavaScript. Browser playback uses a synthesized piano-like tone and requires an initial tap or click. It is a pitch and rhythm reference for this study rather than a recording of the complete composition.

A FEW GOOD QUESTIONS

Before you play

Is The Entertainer suitable for a first piano lesson?

Start with a few notes at a time; the original piece is more demanding than this excerpt. Easy mode gives every note one beat so you can focus on finding the keys. Find D-sharp next to D before playing.

What key is this The Entertainer practice study in?

The Easy and Intermediate studies use C major. Original key keeps the excerpt in this key with its entered phrase rhythm. The transpose control moves all notes together by up to six semitones.

What should I practice first in The Entertainer?

Move the hand for the E to high C leap; do not stretch. Learn the pitches slowly before adding syncopation. Start at 0.5x speed, listen once, and then play a short phrase along with the highlighted keyboard.

Is this the complete original The Entertainer score?

No. This is a short educational melody excerpt with a simplified Easy study and a sparse Intermediate bass guide. This short study isolates the opening tune in C major. Original key describes the pitch setting, not a claim to reproduce a full original edition.

Can I copy and print these The Entertainer notes?

Yes, for personal practice. Choose Letter notes for named pitches or Virtual piano for keyboard characters. Brackets mean play the enclosed keys together. PDF, MIDI, and MusicXML use the selected difficulty and transposition. The draft arrangement still needs human play-through and source-edition approval before publication.
